Plan of Education at Hiram College Calls for Accomplishment in Athletics

Girls as Well as Boys Must Take Part in Variety of Sports Under Program

By A STAFF Reporter

Out in Ohio way there is a little college called Hiram College, and here had been launched one of the most revolutionary plans of education anywhere in the country. It is co-educational; ordinarly there would not be anything extraordinary in that, but in the case of Hiram's plan the girls present a problem.

For, in order to graduate from Hiram, the student must take part in athletics for two years and pass skill tests in a whole variety of team and individual indoor and outdoor, sports. Football, baseball, basketball, tennis, etc. are of course included; so is wrestling.

The girls have the same participation requirements as the boys except that they have grades and credit for sports instead of skill tests, and of course, they do not compete with the boys. Cheecrleading may be good enough for meet weatern college girls, but not so for the amazons of Hiram.

In their mental program Hiram "has eliminated the horror" of mind-years and finals, in the words of Robert Hubbell, publicity director, with whom we have corresponded on the subject. Hubbell, tells us that the students are given plenty of extra; time, so that three quarters of them earn part of their expenses. Although Juniors take comprehensive exams. Hubbell exphasizes that this is on "general knowledge," viz. no craming.

Nine-Week Quarters

The Hiram year is divided into nine-week quarters during which each student takes one "intensive" and one "running course." Whether or not this "running course" is really running or just another wrestling bout is a little hard to understand.

In any case, here is Hiram's daily, schedule, as of last night: 3 to 9 o'clock--"running" course; 9 to 9:30-group meetings, weekly chapel, free time: 9:30 to 11:30 and 2 to 4:30 at the disposal of the "intensive" professor. After 11:30 and after 4:30 (until lunch and supper respectively) athletics.
