Samborski Opens Fall Intra-Mural Program for Yardlings

In its second season of operation, Freshman athletic activities between dormitories will got under way next week with a tennis tournament and touch football games, according to Adolph Samborski, director of Intramural sports.

Started last spring with competition between the Yard dormitories in tennis and softball, the program was considered highly successful as 136 Yardlings competed on the diamond and 50 on the courts.

This year Samborski intends to continue the activities on a larger scale. In addition to the two fall sports there will be basketball and squash leagues during the winter and tennis and soft ball again next spring.

First Game October

In setting the opening date for the fall touch ball season on October 7, Samborski stressed the importance of securing Freshman managers from each dormitory to see that each team is well represented. A Student Council committee under Douglas Mercer '40 is in charge of selecting these managerships, which are regarded by the Intra-mural department as excellent training for House secretaryships.

Games will be scheduled for the coming fall with one or two encounters each day in football. On these days Freshmen may receive credit for exercise. Depending on the number of leagues formed, each team will play ones or twice a week.

Although this year there will be no compelling of the Year's standing of the teams, a system of awards, resembling the house activities may be realized in future years if sufficient interest is shown in the Yard.

Last year Thayer wound up on top in the soft ball standings, while Straus won the tennis meet. All matches on the courts were singles and this system will be repeated this fall in the tournament.

While student managers are responsible for getting men out for competition Samborski's office handles all the details of scheduling the matches and appointing officials.
