BINGHAM TALKS AT PRE-SEASON TRACK MEETING

EARLY WINTER TRACK PROGRAM IS ANNOUNCED

The track team got its after-vacation start yesterday with a meeting in Dillon Field House. Captain Bill Schmidt, Bill Bingham, and Manager Charley Hubbard spoke.

Bingham, who usually speaks at the initial track meetings, reiterated his oft-quoted remarks that track was his favorite sport and paid a special tribute to Jaakko Mikkola, track coach, as well as the whole coaching staff of the college.

Bingham said that he had expected to be questioned by the Finnish contingent on Mikkola when he went abroad with the Olympic team but was surprised when an officer in the English army also talked about him in an intimate way.

The reason for this was that Mikkola has gone to England a couple of times during the summer to lecture on track at various public schools.

Bingham also explained that Bill Neufeld, new Freshman track coach, had been recommended to him by Brutus Hamilton, head coach of the Olympic team, when Bingham had expressed a desire to get an assistant track coach.

The team held its first after-vacation practice yesterday; some members, however, did a little work during the past two weeks.

Some of them will be sent into the Y.M.C.A. meet later in the month, Jaakko hopes, and relay teams and a couple of other members will compete in the Millrose games and B.A.A. meets.
