Varsity-Freshman Meet to Replace Annual Handicap Meet Among All Runners

Whatever happens to the track teams this winter there will be plenty of spirit judging at least by the tenor of the talks in Dillon Field House yesterday afternoon before over 100 candidates for the Varsity and Freshman insignia.

Coach Jaako Mikkola talked and said that a lot of spirit and hard work was necessary. Assistant coach Bill Neufeld talked and said that a lot of hard work and spirit was necessary. Captain Bill Schmidt talked and said--

Judging from the holes that graduation made in the team, a lot of spirit and hard work will be necessary. Milt Green was consistently good for three first places. Norm Cahners won a lot of points. Dick Johnson was as good a javelin thrower as there was in the east. Then there was John Dorman in the middle distance runs. Gorry Downer, Bob Hall, Mal Millard, and even Bob Playfair once in a while.

This year there's a lot of boys with spirit.

An actual test of what can be expected for the winter season will be made in the middle of the month when in place of the annual handicap meet, there will be a duel between the Freshmen and Varsity. And already it's being whispered confidentially that the Freshmen have a good chance of winning.

So far this year the Freshmen have been doing a lot of work while most of the Varsity aspirants have yet to get down to steady practice. Bill Schmidt got a special boost from Neufeld, however, for the work that he's been doing so far, while most of the members of the cross country team should be in pretty good shape still.

One of the strongest point winners is expected to be Emile Dubiel, if and when he can compete. Al Northrop, a great miler, is in the same capacity, but both are expected to be eligible after the exam period.

"A lot of hard work" is what Jaako expects to bring home the results. "Only efforts bring rewards" he continued in his welcoming address. "One big advantage we will have is that all our opponents will underrate us. But we will win out", he continued. "Remember, you are working not only for yourselves but for the folks at home who think a lot of you." His remarks closed the meeting.
