Five winter sports, basketball, boxing fencing, squash, and wrestling, entered the preliminary stages of their seasons yesterday; a sixth, swimming, has already been in progress several weeks.
Basketball authorities reported an initial Varsity turnout of over 40 headed by Ernest A. Gray, Jr. '37, captain, and Leavitt S. White '37, captain last year. Only noticeable absence was that of Vernon Struck '38, a guard, who is now with the football team. Ulysses S. Lupien '39, former Yardling leader, and a considerable Sophomore delegation also were on hand.
In boxing and wrestling the exercise rooms were formally declared open, but as with the other sports, intensive training does not begin until after the Yale football game.
W. Brooks Cavin, Jr. '37, wrestling captain, and the new coach Pat Orr Johnson '33, reported on the floor early. John C. Harkness '38, 175-lb winner against Yale last year, showed up during the afternoon.
In fencing, Coach Reno Peroy was pleased by a large initial turnout of over 25. Three lettermen reported to take up the epee, Captain Edward O. Miller '37, William F. Hayden '37, and Albert E. Wemer '38. William F. Gerber '37, returns with his foil and Elmer Harp, Jr. ocC., with the sabre.
Squash found 60 candidates for the Varcity, including two of the 1936 team, Captain Richard M. Dorson '37, and Alvah W. Sulloway '38; Coach Harry Cowles is also looking for big things from Philip C. Staples '37, a football end, and four Sophomores, George B. Blake, Francis H. Appleton, 3rd, S. Haddon Cunningham, Jr., and James English, Jr.
Finally Coach Hal Ulen and Captain John J. Colony '37 of the swimming team are appearing particularly happy over the prosepects of their natators as only four of last year's team have graduated.
Among the Freshmen, basketballers are working out in Hemenway gymnasium, squash players report today and tomorrow, while candidates in the other events have received no formal call as yet.
