Candidates who report Wednesday night will be let off on Friday afternoon for the Yale game. They will not have to report back until Sunday evening.
Freshman and Sophomore Business and Sophomore Editorial Competitions will also open this evening with a preliminary meeting at the Crimson Building, 14 Plympton Street, at 7:30 o'clock.
Freshmen interested in news writing or in news photography will get their first opportunity to try out for the CRIMSON News or Photographic Boards tonight at a preliminary meeting to be held at the Crimson Building, 14 Plympton Street, at 7:30 o'clock.
These competitions have been delayed this far into November because of late hour exams caused by the tardy opening of College. The competition will start actively this Thursday morning and will run without interruption to the Christmas vacation. It will open again after the vacation and run from then until January 19, closing at that time until after the exam period. The last week of the competition will run in February directly after the examination period.
The news competition will include a complete training in writing, covering, and following up stories; in organizing and running a paper; and in handling the physical details of make-up (that is writing headlines, type and form make-up).
This competition is strenuous, particularly during the last few weeks, but attention is paid to the scholastic standing of candidates, and no-one need be worried about passing his mid-year exams or any other course work.
The photographic competition will give a thorough training in the technical side of news photography and the rudiments of formal and informal portraiture. While the competition is designed chiefly for those with some previous photographic experience, there is no reason why a novice who is willing to work intensively for the first few weeks should not stand an even chance with his more experienced competitors.
Stress in the competition will lie not only on excellence of photographic technique, but also on the ability to realize what makes a picture newsworthy. Work may be done with the cameras owned by the CRIMSON, but in some cases, particularly where candid work is involved, candidates familiar with their own cameras and miniature technique are urged to use their own apparatus.
