HARKNESS ESTABLISHES AN INTRAMURAL TROPHY

NINE SPORTS ARE REPRESENTED IN COMPETITION FOR PRIZE

A Harvard-Yale Intramural Championship Trophy has been presented to the two universities by Edward S. Harkness of New York City. The trophy is a silver two-handled cup, made in London in 1770 by the English silversmith Robert Schofield.

Each year the results of extensive schedules in nine different intramural sports determine nine championship teams at each university and Intercollegiate games between the champions determine the Harvard-Yale champions in each sport. The nine sports are football, touch football, basketball, swimming, squash, crew, tennis, golf, and baseball. The trophy will be awarded each year to the university whose teams win the majority of the championships.

Mr. Harkness has long been an advocate of greater emphasis on intramural athletics as opposed to intercollegiate athletics. It was rumored only a few years ago that he had offered a three million dollar endowment to Harvard on the condition that the athletic program be largely restricted to intramural sports, and that no intercollegiate games be played except with Yale.

The cup given by Mr. Harkness will be engraved with the arms of both colleges and will bear the legend "Harvard-Yale Intramural Championship."
