Fall crew was brought to a close yesterday with a pair of races over the three-quarter mile course in the Basin both of which were dominated by the Freshmen. In the initial race the first Freshman outrowed the first Varsity and led them across the line by more than half a length while the second Varsity boat was bringing up the rear.
Upsets in the second race, which included three Freshman crews and a pair of 150-pound crews, were no less startling than in the first row. The first 150-pound crew took an early lead which it held to within a hundred yards of the finish line, where it caught a crab. The first Freshman crew took up the lead here and held it for a half-dozen strokes, but they, too, caught a crab here and it was the second Freshman that was first across the line. One of the men in the third Freshman broke an oar near the start.
These races conclude all outdoor practice this fall. Starting next week Whiteside and his staff of coaches will be in daily attendance inside the boathouse, where practice will be continued on the machines. It is not yet known how many will answer the call for winter rowers.
The boatings of the First Freshman--Stroke, C. W. Lawrence; 7, H. T. Mortimer; 6, J. R. Chapin, Jr.; 5, B. B. Kirkland; 4, R. S. Beekman; 3, O. S. Foote; 2, G. G. Tarbell, Jr.; bow, W. K. Macy, Jr.; cox, A. B. Fox.
