PRAISE GOD

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

When Puritan John Winthrop set aside the last Thursday in November as a day for giving thanks unto God, he had no thought of a future legal holiday that would cause difficulties at Harvard. If he had proclaimed Monday as the day of much eating, many students who now remain in Cambridge would be able to share the family turkey at home. Yet the sad fact remains that Thursday is the day. University Hall should accept this fact as inevitable and issue a proclamation about the entire weekend.

If precedent is needed for such action, there is plenty of it. Until last year the students at Yale University suffered in the same way. At that time the Yale News demanded the entire Thanks giving weekend; students supported this campaign with hundreds of pledges, and the gods of New Haven granted their request!

The break in routine would not come at a vital time. November hour exams are over and midyears more than a month away What if the academic world does stop rotating for four days The fine tradition of American families should have more influence at least once a year.
