CRIMSON TRIUMPHS OVER YALE BEHIND CAPTAIN LOUGHLIN

The second and last game of the Harvard-Yale baseball series will be played at New Haven this afternoon.

As the climax to a perfect Class Day the Varsity baseball team kept Yale under control yesterday afternoon at Soldiers Field and emerged a 3-2 victor despite a dangerous eighth inning. Captain Eddie Loughlin went the distance in this opening game of the 64th annual series and provided a win for an audience of 700 grads and their families.

Harvard's scoring started in the opening frame when John Ware, veteran center feilder, came home on a wild pitch by Yale's pitcher-captain George Parker. Ware had reached first on the start of a series of four passes given by Parker in the initial inning.

From then until the fourth both teams were inactive as far as tallies were concerned. But with the beginning of the fourth the Elis started to even things up. Their second baseman, Johnny Dugan, had been walked and had stolen second when first-sacker Dave Armstrong slammed out the longest hit of the day, a triple to right field. That made the situation one all as Fred Mitchell's tutees came to the plate.

The Mitchellmen swung into action immediately. Braman Gibbs, right fielder, walked, and was advanced to second by Dick Maguire's sacrifice. Ben Prouty singled to bring him home. Johnny Fitzpatrick, who had also walked, came in a minute later on a beautiful double to center field slammed out by Ware. That raised the Crimson to three runs, their final score for the day.

Yale's remaining marker came in the eighth. It looked as if it was Harvard's day by long odds, and Captain Loughlin began to ease up from the pitcher's box. He passed Williamson, Curtin singled, and Dugan filled the sacks when Charley Nevin had trouble with a grounder. Then Armstrong again caused trouble with his bat. This time it was a tricky bounding grounder that Johnny Adzigian failed to hold on to. In came Williamson, making it Yale 2, Harvard 3. This was the final tally as the Blue went out in order thereafter.
