Shubert
After having had its name changed innumerable times the new Friml operetta has been chirstened "Annina" and the first performance will be given tomorrow night at the Shubert. At the head of a pretentious cast is the Viennese prima donna, Mme. Jeritza, famous for her voice and blonde hair. The story holds true to the tradition of light opera both in having its setting in the lazy and carefree Vienna of Francis Joseph, and in the Cinderella motiff which is the basis of the plot. With the singing of Jeritza, the undoubted musical ability of Mr. Friml, and the elaborate production that is promised, the opening of "Annina" should be a notable one.
Tremont
Beginning next Monday at the Hollis Theatre is C. L. Anthony's romantic comedy, "Autumn Crocus" with Rollo Peters and Mabel Taliaferro in the starring roles.
"Autumn Crocus" was one of the successes of last year both in New York and in London. It is a recoil from the hard-boiled type of comedy that is represented by Mr. Noel Coward, being written in the tradition of Barrie. Instead of depending for its appeal on verbal celverness, or shocking lines it sets up in place of these an air of quiet pleasantness and of deliberately sentimental romance. It is difficult to draw the line between tenderness and a sweetness that becomes sickening; but Barrie was able to do it and it is done with almost as much success in "Autumn Crocus."
The action all takes place in twenty-four hours in the Austrian Tyrol, with most of it transpiring in the Rote Hirsh or Reed Deer Inn presided over by a handsome young man. To the Hotel, on her holiday, comes an English school teacher whose life has been atrofied by a lifetime of teaching. The romance between the two lasts only for a day and a night; but during that time there comes for the girl an emotional awakening, a balcony scene taken right from "Romeo and Juliet", tragedy in the discovery of her lover's status as a husband, and suffering at her departure for England. The story is a simple one and beautifully conceived.
Keith-Boston
Starting Friday the Keith-Boston Theatre presents on its stage the outstanding stars and principal attractions who were at the Chicago World's Fair last Summer, all brought together in one show called "Midway Nights" featuring Rosalia and her fan dance, Mona Lesllie's "nudity in gold" which created such a furore in the "Streets of Paris" at the Fair, Andrini Brothers from the "Spanish Pavilion," Prosper and Maret from "Oriental Village," and Dave Lee, the Midway comic. On the screen the newest Fox Film, "Coming Out Party," is presented with Frances Dee and Gene Raymond heading the cast.
The picture depicts the petty hates and desires of debutantes and their ambitions, social-climbing mothers, conniving social secretaries, ambitious band leaders, and stags crashing coming-out parties.
Frances Dee and Gene Raymond provide the romantic interest while other important roles are filled by Alison Skipworth, Nigel Bruce, Harry Green, Gilbert Emery, Marjorie Gates and others.
