For the first time this year, Coach Charles J. Whiteside yesterday found the ice of the Charles River sufficiently melted to allow him to stage an outdoor practice, and nine crews were put through their initial outdoor workout. The opening practice on the Charles came extremely late this year, since last year the candidates were on the river by February 27. As a result of this delay, a great deal of work will be necessary before the crew will be ready for any competition.
