Competing in the first eliminations of the Boylston and Lee Wade Elocution Contests, thirty four students will speak this afternoon in Emerson D. The declamations will commence promptly at 1 o'clock and will continue throughout the afternoon.
Approximately half of the contestants will be eliminated at the contest today. Those who survived this initial cut will be required to present their selections again in the New Lecture Hall on Friday at 2 o'clock.
The judges of the trials scheduled for today will be Robert S. Hillyer '17, associate professor of English; Gustavus H. Maynadier '89, assistant professor of English; Frederick C. Packard '20, assistant professor of Public Speaking; Robert W. Coues '95, instructor in English; and Norman W. Mattis, instructor in Public Speaking. The judges of the eliminations to be held Friday have not yet been announced.
The third and final contest will take place in Paine Hall, Harvard Music Building on March 28 at 8 o'clock. John H. Dean '34, First Marshal of the Senior Class, will preside. The judges of this elimination have not as yet been selected, but it is understood that they will be Member of the Board of Overseers and other distinguished alumni.
Four prizes will be awarded at the final contest. The Lee Wade Prize of $50, the First Boylston Prize of $50, and the Second Boylston Prizes of $35 each.
