SWIMMERS OVERWHELM BROWN TANK TEAM, 51-20

ED STOWELL SHATTERS HARVARD BACKSTROKE RECORD

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In a meet characterized by several upsets, notably in the dive and fifty, the Varsity swimming team swamped Brown Saturday, 51-20, taking all but two firsts. One of the many features of the meet came when Captain Ed Stowell, after being pushed for four laps by Stanton, set a new Harvard record in the backstroke. Harry Fitts, apparently in the best form he has shown all season, scored the biggest surprise by defeating Lyman, the Brown veteran diver, for the first time in the Harvard pool. George Scott, despite a slow start in the fifty, managed to close up a narrow lead, and finally edge ahead of Lewis, with Roy Wallace a close third.

The summary:

220-yard free style swim--Won by Lee (B); second, Edward C. Devereux, Jr. '34; third, Delaney (B). Time--2 minutes, 22 3-5 seconds.

50-yard free style swim--Won by George C. Scott '34; second, Lewis (B); third, Roy S. Wallace '35. Time--24 3-5 seconds.

Dive--Won by Henry K. Fitts, Jr. '36 (86-12 points); second, Lyman (B); third, Bernard F. Merriam '36.
