Tutorial as Supplement to Open Lectures Is Suggested

Herring Says Tutorial Reading Could Furnish Foundation for Lectures

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The suggestion that tutorial work could be made to supplement the new voluntary lectures in government was offered yesterday by E. Pendleton Hering, instructor in Government, who has just completed the first three lectures of the new series.

"In giving a short series of lectures, it is difficult for the lecturer to lay a factual foundation for the dissertation," he said. The student is consequently plunged into a discussion with only his general knowledge of the subject to help him understand it, Under the pressure of required courses it can hardly be expected that he will do preliminary reading on the subject. There, I think that the tutorial reading of students interested in the lectures might be chosen to given them a better understanding of the topic under consideration."
