Pop Hits and Politics: At Yardfest, Students Dance to Bedingfield and a Student Band Condemns Trump
This afternoon on the turf of the Stadium and amid the cheers of the throng, there will be staged a performance that will go down in history as one of the major events of the year 1934.
It won't be the football team that makes history this afternoon, but rather that adjunct of every football game, which is often ignored by those who make a trip to the refreshment stands during the period between the halves--the Harvard Band.
Harvard men the world over have been prone to sing the praise of the band, and to say that the music which proceeds therefrom is unexcelled in these United States, but when the Band swings into a huge "H", stretching from one side of the field to the other, few of these boosters will realize that it is forming the hundredth letter of the 1934 season.
In years gone by, it has been the boast of the Harvard Band that it has managed to distort itself into about 84 formations, but when it announces that the letter today will be No. 100 on the schedule, it is something that even the sophisticated might reflect upon.
According to its backers, the Band will be breaking not only national records but its own record when it forms the letter "H" today. In 1932 this organization was able to form a magnificent total of 84 letters.
Even punctuation has not escaped the notice of the band this year, since it has formed two commas and four periods. Commas in the opinion of the band are more important than periods, because it counts the two commas in its total of letters formed, while it completely ignores the four periods.
