Paris, Oct. 7--Overwhelming defeat for the Socialist and Communist "common front" and a complete victory for Gaston Doumergue's National Union Government were indicated today by returns from France's cantonal elections.

Returns, virtually complete and tabulated at midnight, indicated some gains on the right and center parties, with the Radical-Socialists merely holding their own strength.
