Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
Jaakko Mikkola's harriers hope to dulicate their sweeping victory of last year when they meet Holy Cross this afternoon. With only one of last year's men lost by graduation, and with the squad strengthened by a number of 1937 men, Harvard's cross-country prospects are as bright this season as they have been since the days of Penn Hallowell's team.
Though Bob Playfair, who broke the tape in last year's contest, is absent from today's competition because of the Italian Meet, Harvard stands a good chance of sending the trio of Woodard, Scheu, and Pier over the line before the first purple jersey reaches the finish.
Roys, Walker, and Channing are also potential tape-breakers. Walker and Channing, who face their first varsity competition this afternoon, were members of the team which defeated the Holy Cross freshmen last year.
Most dangerous of the squad's opponents is Kenney, who placed fourth in the 1932 meet and second in last year's meet. Malloy, who captained the freshman team of last year, will also cause the Crimson runners plenty of trouble.
The meet, which begins at 3.30, will follow a route slightly different from that of previous years. Beginning as usual near the Larz Anderson Bridge, the harriers will go up the right-hand side of the river but instead of taking in Cemetery hill, they will detour below it; road construction necessitating the change. the runners will finish at the Newell Boat House.
A Freshman team of unknown strength will also meet its first test of the season. The Freshman meet, which will precede the varsity's, follows the customary distance around the inside of the Soldiers Field fence. Among the Harvard Freshmen are Robert Crimmins, Graham Cummin, William J. Mixter, Tuder Richards, and A. C. Northrop.
