Construction of a small calibre rifle and pistol range under the Harvard Stadium will be begun this Saturday by the Harvard Rifle Club, with the co-operation of the Military Science Department and the H.A.A., it was announced yesterday by officials of the club, who hope to hold .22 calibre matches there this spring.
It is expected that the range will be 75 feet long. It is to be situated on the north side of the Stadium, underneath the tower. The Military Science pistol team will practice there, and Major H. C. Jones, coach of the team, announced yesterday that any members of the Military Science Department would be eligible for it. Major Jones, a wellknown marksman, is to help direct the construction of the new range.
Thirty tons of sand and several large steel plates will furnish backing for the targets and insure against stray bullets, while wooden planking, furnished by the H.A.A. will block off the range from the rest of the district underneath the Stadium.
Rifle Club officials stated that the purpose of the new project was to promote small calibre rifle and pistol shooting in the University, and to save some of the time which is wasted driving out to the Walnut Hill Range in Woburn. However, members of the club will continue to use Walnut Hill for the .30 calibre shooting, and a team will be formed as usual this spring for inter college competition.
The new range under the Stadium can naturally only be used in relatively warm weather. In order to shoot there, students must either become members of the Rifle Club or try out for the Mili- tary Science pistol team. There is a possibility that a Naval Science pistol team may also be formed if enough interest is shown.
No shooting will be permitted except pistol firing under the supervision of Major Jones or rifle firing under the supervision of a member of the Rifle Club executive committee, which consists of the following men: J. A. Booth '33, E. D. Brooks '34, Eugene Dubois '33, W. E. Forbes '34, A. B. Morehouse '33, F. H. Poor, Jr. '34, H. P. Walker, Jr. '33, and David Weld '34. A consignment of some 10,000 rounds of .22 calibre ammunition is expected from the War Department shortly. Students wishing to join the club, which at present numbers 60 men, may do so by secing W.E. Forbes in Eliot House M-4
