Fears that student waiters in the Union would lose their jobs, or that prices of the meals for Freshmen might rise were brought to an end last night when the Union Committee decided to turn down the proposals suggested in the recent petition signed by 175 members of the Freshman Class. These proposals were either to advance the closing hour for breakfast from 8.30 to 9 o'clock, or to grant permission to such men as wish it to sign for 14 meals per week.
The Union Committee gave the following reasons for their decision:
"Under present conditions, the peak load on the waiters comes between 8.30 and 9 o'clock, and student waiters are often hurried in getting away for 9 o'clock classes. Under the proposed advancement of the breakfast hour, the peak load would continue past 9 o'clock, and student waiters would have to give up their 9 o'clock classes or waitresses would have to be substituted for some of them. Since either of these results would be undesirable, we oppose this change.
"The present rate for board in the Union is lower than in the Houses. This low rate would not be possible if part of the Freshmen were permitted to sign for 14 meals only. There is no doubt that some men who take frequent meals outside the Union are inconvenienced by the present system of charging.
