One hundred seventy-five Freshmen have signed a petition complaining of the breakfast hours in the Union. The submission of this complaint to Delmar Leighton, dean of Freshmen, last Friday brought to a head the fear that the 50 student waiters in the Union will lose their jobs. The petition reads:
"We the undersigned, holders of Freshman table cards, find it very inconvenient to be unable to obtain breakfast after 8.30 A.M. We do, therefore, hereby petition that one of the following steps be taken in order to remedy the situation:
Either: that breakfast be served up until 9 o'clock as in the House dining halls.
Or: that Freshmen be allowed to sign for only 14 meals per week if they so desire, also as in the House dining halls."
Dean Leighton has turned the petition over to Edmund A. Mays '32, Secretary of the Union, who will submit it to a vote of the Union Committee at a meeting next Wednesday. If approved the petition will be referred back to the Dean.
Regarding the proposed changes, Mays has said: "I think that I would be opposed to the suggestions because either of them would make it necessary to abolish student waiters. I also object to the 14 meal proposal because, at present, the Union dining hall is the only place in College where all the members of one class can get together."
