Crew and tennis are again the favorite fall sports of the Freshman class. Each was chosen by 189 men, making a tie for first place; last year crew had the edge over tennis, but by only one vote. The greatest change in this year's choice is the growing popularity of swimming which has superseded football in third place. Football, with 144 supporters, shares fourth place with singles, as compared with 190 for football and 101 for singles last fall. Handball, wrestling, and lacrosse have become more popular this year, while hiking as a sport has disappeared from the list altogether.
Although the total number of Freshmen taking exercise has diminished from 1083 to 1017, the relative popularity of sports has not materially changed.
Complete figures for this year, with last year's numbers in parentheses, follow: crew, 189 (202); tennis, 189, (201); swimming, 165, (88); singles, 144, (101); football, 144, (190); track, 49 (68); soccer, 48 (68); cross-country, 28 (41); fencing, 22 (88); miscellaneous, 17 (12); baseball, 13 (28); managers, 12 (listed last year under different sports); handball, 11 (15); polo, 8 (19); wrestling, 7; lacrosse, %.
