KICKING IS EMPHASIZED IN VARSITY PRACTICE

CASEY, CROCKER, AND GLEASONS OUT OF BUFFALO GAME

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harvard's first string team went through some intensive drilling on kicking yesterday afternoon in preparation for the Buffalo game Saturday.

Dean did some beautiful punting while the coaches worked on protection for the kicker and on having the ends get down the field as fast as possible. When the Jayvees received the ball in their turn in the informal scrimmage, emphasis was placed on the Varsity wingbacks taking out the scrub ends. Crickard made some excellent catches of kicks by Adams of the Jayees.

Hurlbut took Nevin's place on the A lineup yesterday, as the latter cannot play in any game until he hears from his examination, and the coaches wanted to polish up a substitute in case the regular fullback should fall to pass. Crickard, being a senior, is eligible to play before he hears from his examination.

Casey, the two Gleasons, and Crocker are now definitely out of the Buffalo game, while Bennett is extremely doubtful, since he was on crutches yesterday. Whitney will probably have recovered from his injury sufficiently to play in Saturday's contest, but Dow and Casale are questionable.

Graduated Schedule

Harvard's schedule this autumn is undoubtedly as easier one than last year, when the Army game really came too early. This season the schedule is more exactly graduated and should give the coaches a much better opportunity to develop the reserves which they are now lacking. Strong replacements for practically any of the line positions are not available, although Coach Casey without question has as good a first line as last year. Captain Hageman, Hardy, Esterly, Nazro, and Hallowell have occupied their old positions without any challenge, while Gundlach and Bancroft have shown plenty of improvement and are firmly entrenched in their present places.

Coach Casey will probably put the University squad through a light scrimmage today, while tomorrow the workout will be only half an hour long.

Freshmen will turn out in force tomorrow, when they will be all through exams. Coach R. H. Bond '19, assisted by E. A. Mays 1GB and B. D. White '32, last year's backfield stars, has some excellent material to work on this season, particularly in the backfield.
