While Captain Record and 27 of his running mates are traveling to Princeton this afternoon, the remainder of the University track squad and the 1935 team will be struggling for honors in the trials of the third annual Greater Boston Intercollegiate track meet at Soldiers Field beginning at 3 o'clock. With most of the Crimson entrants untried in stiff competition, Coach Ryder's well-balanced team from Boston College and a strong aggregation from Northeastern are the favorites in the University meet. The Harvard Freshman team should run away with the 1935 events.
In the sprints the Casey brothers, and McManus of Boston College, Bell of M.I.T., and Crickard, Brown, and Niles of Harvard are outstanding. MacKenzie of Northeastern, E. Carey, Holland, and Merritt of Boston College, and Cheek and Streeter of Harvard should score in the hurdle races. King, Parks, Smith, and Whelan are strong B.C. quarter-milers and Jewett of M.I.T. should also score. Harvard has Niles, Maguire, and Piper.
Events today will reduce the field in the University events to six qualifiers in the discus, shot put, hammer throw, broad jump, and javelin, to semi-finalists in the sprints and hurdles, and to finalists in the 440 and 880-yard runs. The same will be true of Freshman events, with the exception of the weights, which will be run off today. The final events will take place tomorrow.
