Ready to face a crew from Cornell which has been proclaimed one of the strongest in the East, and an undefeated Syracuse eight, Harvard's Varsity crew will enter tomorrow's regatta in the Basin hardly a favorite, but prepared to establish its right to represent Harvard as a sprinting crew in the Olympic tryouts.
Coach Whiteside's crew will go to the starting line at 4.30 o'clock with a new seating, tried for the first time yesterday afternoon, which bears a close resemblance to the lineup on the Severn two weeks ago than to most of the seatings tried since then in practice. R. H. Hallowell '33 and W. H. Holcombe '33 have been put back in the first eight at 2 and bow respectively, replacing C. F. Hovey '32 and A. L. Nickerson, Jr. '33 who will row 4 and bow in the Jayvee boat.
With Captain T. E. Armstrong '32 back at number 4 in the University crew, as in the season's opener with Tech, Coach Whiteside has again put his faith in his last year's "champions" to make a bid for the rowing supremacy against an old rival and a University where he himself once produced victorious crews.
From Ithaca, comes a Varsity crew, coached by Wray, which has had the honor of being nosed out by only three feet by Yale, and which, though really a distance crew, has proved its ability to hit a high stroke for short races.
Although the Syracuse Varsity which comes alone to represent the Orange, has had only one race this Spring, its length and a half victory early in the season, over what was considered a powerful Navy eight, has marked it an element to be reckoned with tomorrow. The fact that Stroke Lombardi in three years has never set the pace for a losing boat is a fair indication of what kind of crews Syracuse has produced in the past, and what it is capable of against Cornell and Harvard.
The Jayvee race, called for 4 o'clock, will be confined to a Harvard and a Cornell entry. The Freshman race at 3.30 o'clock will see a revamped Crimson boat stroked by T. H. Whitney '35 who was promoted a few days ago from the disbanded lightweights.
