BENSON SUCCEEDS HAMMOND AS HEAD TUTOR OF LOWELL

Social, Athletic, and Business Matters of House Have Flourished During Hammond's Regime

On September 1, Dr. G. C. S. Benson, tutor in government at Lowell House, will become Head Tutor of the House, to replace Mason Hammond '25, tutor in Classics, it has been announced by J. L. Coolidge '95, professor of mathematics and master of the House. Hammond, who has recently become engaged, will continue as Head Tutor until September of this year, when he will become a non-resident tutor in Classics.

Dr. Benson, who has been a tutor in government for the past two years, and a member of Lowell House tutorial staff during this year, received an A.B. degree at Pomona College, Southern California, in 1928; in 1929 Dr. Benson received his master's degree at the University of Illinois, and his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1931.

During his regime of one and one-half years, the first in the history of the House, the retiring Head Tutor has guided the formulation of various House activities which have since become an integral part in the life of the House. Largely due to Hammond's suggestions are the tutor's meetings, held weekly, at which matters of House interest are discussed, and a distinct esprit de corps maintained. The house committee is customarily admitted to these meetings.

The High Table dinners during the past year and a half have been supervised by Hammond, as well as large numbers of other House matters of pro-procedure. Hammond was chiefly instrumental in founding the athletics of the House, influencing the organization of teams in the fall, and winter. In the spring the retiring head tutor rowed regularly on the House crew, rowing at number five in the first inter-house race in history last April when the Lowell crew left Dunster in the foam. Just before this river classic Hammond donned a beard and derby when the Lowell eight took part in an all-Harvard flotilla.
