A complete registration table, containing the times and places of registration for members of the University in all departments, will be found on page four of today's Crimson.
With the second full enrollment in as many years, the School of Business Administration will begin its twenty-fourth year of existence when approximately 600 of the first year class register at Baker Library tomorrow morning.
The two hundred and ninety-sixth year of Harvard's existence will be inaugurated by this registration; other departments of the University will register on either Friday, Saturday, or next Monday, at which time second year Business School students will enroll.
As last year, all of the dormitory accommodations of the Business School will be filled. The buildings hold about 900 students, while the total enrollment of the School is expected to number 1,050. This difference is taken up partly by those who prefer to live outside and at home, and partly by married students. The total number of applications for the School this year has been slightly smaller than last, when about 1,250, a record number, were received.
Staff Changes
This year will see several changes in the professorial staff of the School. Professor M. P. MacNair will be on leave of absence until February to give courses in the Business branch of the London School of Economics. He will lecture on retail store management at the London school, this branch of which is following the leadership of the Harvard Business School. R. G. Walker, associate professor of Accounting, will be on leave of absence for the whole year.
Five new men have been added to the staff of the Business School. Professor W. A. Hosmer of accounting, on leave of absence from Hobart College, and Mr. L. L. Briggs will be instructors in Accounting; and H. W. Dunn, professor of Finance, will give instruction in Banking and Finance. In the Division of Research, Assistant Professor T. N. Whitehead and W. L. Warner will work on Industrial Research.
Grading System Revised
The opening of the Business School's twenty-fourth year will see a change in the methods of grading students. Students' work will be marked "Unsatisfactory", below 65; "Pass", 65-79; and "Distinction", above 79, with the further distinctions "High Pass" and "Low Pass" which have been in use formerly, laid aside.
In commenting on the change Assistant Dean E. F. Wright '24 said, "The faculty feels that emphasis should be placed not on petty policing by hour exams and reports, and on accumulating grades, but on the total training in constructive thinking on business problems which the student is receiving. Hour exams will be given only in November, with the object of weeding out obvious misfits and men in need of assistance. As in the Law School, emphasis will be placed on final exams. Instructors will also be called upon for estimates of their student's ability."
