Despite fierce rallies in each of the nine matches played, the Harvard net team bowed to superior odds in its match last Saturday against the University of North Carolina and was defeated 7 to 2. The victory for the Tar-heelers stamped them as the leading collegiate tennis team in the East, for in toppling the Crimson they broke a record of 38 consecutive wins and at the same time extended their own streak to 25.
Ingraham Defeats Yeomans
Bryan Grant and Wilmer Hines, nationally ranking court veterans, were pressed to the limit by their Cambridge opponents. Grant defeated Breese 5-7, 6-2, 6-1; while Hines took his match with the Harvard captain, Hill, 6-1, 7-9, 6-4. Yeomans, another Carolinian who is nationally known fell prey to the inspired play of Ingraham, the Crimson's number three man, who ran out two straight sets 6-4, 6-2, providing the upset of the day.
The match with Harvard was the sixth which the Tarheelers had won last week. Among their opponents was Yale, which took advantage of the visitors' over-confidence, and won four points only to lose 5-4. Grant is United States claycourt champion and Hines in national junior champion. Beside In-graham's victory over Yeomans, Harvard took one doubles win when Breese and Frame gained the verdict over Yeomans and Wright, 6-3, 6-3.
