With the approach of spring the plea for the opening of the chemical laboratories of evenings, in order to give the student of Chemistry free use of afternoons, has been resurrected from the past. The Chemistry Department has always negated the proposal, for the reason that it would entail an additional yearly expense of approximately $8,000. And further, when a census was taken some time ago to discover the exact number in favor of the proposed innovation, it was found that while many favored it in theory, few were willing to pledge themselves to a specific schedule.
The seclusion forced on the concentrator in Chemistry due to the necessity of spending his afternoons in the laboratory has isolated him to a certain degree from the rest, of the University. As a result, either his work suffers in order to allow him to enjoy the athletic and social advantages to be gained in extra curricular activity, or he neglects this side of college life in favor of his laboratory work.
The objections to the opening of the laboratories for the spring and fall terms at least, are not insurmountable. But as the question has been brought up in the past and as the administration found a lack of adequate student support at that time, it is now up to those concerned to take the initiative. If there is a real need for the opening of the laboratories then sufficient support must be organized to justify the under taking.
