In the preliminaries of the New England Intercollegiate Wrestling Championship Tournament, held at M.I.T. yesterday afternoon and evening, the Harvard University team forged ahead of its four opponents, Brown, M.I.T., Tufts, and Williams. The respective scores were 5, 2, 2, 1, 0. The finals of the tournament will be held in the Walker Memorial Gymnasium at the same college tonight at 7 o'clock.
The source of the home team's potential strength lay in its heavy end, as shown by the fact that all five points were gleaned by the hardened grapplers, J.F. Solano '30 in the 165-pound class, who threw both opponents, C.D. Newhart '31 in the 175-pound class, who won his bout by a fall, and Captain Nathaniel Warner '30 in the unlimited class, who also threw two opponents.
The team was noticeably weakened by the absences of H.R. Elsas '32 in the 135-pound class, and of R.K. Safford '31, in the 145-pound class.
Members of the Freshman team who have successfully battled their way to the finals in the same tournament are A.L. Bronstein '33 in the 125-pound class, P.O. Johnson '33 in the 135-pound class, J.H. Crandon '33 in the 145-pound class, and O.E. Goddard '33 in the 155-pound class. M.A. Keyser '33 was prevented from representing the 165-pound class because of a bad knee.
The lineup for the finals follows: 115- pound class, Chase vs. Axford (M.I.T.), 125-pound class, Klein vs. Stella (T), 155-pound class, Robertson vs. Baldwin (W): 165-pound class, Solano vs. Stone (M.I.T.): 175-pound class, Newhart vs. Minasian (T): Unlimited class, Warner vs. Richardson (B)
