A fighting and hard-checking Marquette hockey team came all the way from the Middle West and completely took the Harvard six by surprise last night scoring a 4 to 3 victory over the Crimson in opening their Eastern invasion. The defeat was the first pinned on Harvard by an American team this year.
The game up until the last five minutes was just a good, rough hockey tilt but then both sides opened up with a terrific punch and alternately scored two goals apiece in a furious five minute setto. Captain Don MacFayden, the visitors Canadian ace, counted once and assisted in the other Marquette score in this last minute rush while Putnam and Stubbs scored single-handed for the Crimson. Furlong and MacFayden had previously chalked up goals for Marquette while Batchelder had counted for Harvard.
Rough and Tumble Game
It was a rough and bloody melee that left more than one stain on the Garden ice, with 17 penalties in all being dealt out by the referees. Harvard took ten of them and besides being short on temper also seemed short on wind. Coach Stubb's charges were obviously out of condition after the long midyear lay off but Marquette might have beaten them at any time. The Crimson found the Hilltoppers a hard working team.
The game started in a rough and tumble manner with both sides displaying plenty of fight and spirit. Batchelder dumped the puck in on a pass from Stubbs from almost behind the cage before both sides settled down to play ordinary hockey. With the period half gone Furlong skated down from nowhere and lifted an easy shot into the net that caught Ellis napping.
Visitors Take Lead
The Mid-westerners jumped into the lead in the second stanza, but not until the very and after both sides had displayed some sparkling hockey. Twice Harvard had only three men on the ice but both times the Hilltoppers failed to make use of their advantage.
It was Don MacFayden, who broke the tie just a minute before the period ended. His sizzling shot from the left side hit one of the iron posts and slipped into the cage.
The third period started out to be a repetition of the second: then came the eventful five minutes and the climatic close.
