HARVARD SOCIALISTS TO INTRODUCE NEW PAPER

FIRST ISSUE WILL BE PLACED ON SALE THURSDAY

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"The Socialist," a new fortnightly publication that will contain feature articles, editorials and news-stories of intercollegiate interest and which will from time to time carry articles by such men as Norman Thomas, Heywood Broun, and Dr. Laidler, will make its first appearance in Harvard Square on Thursday morning. The paper is being sponsored directly by the Harvard Socialist Club and the Young People's Socialist League of New England, and, indirectly by the League for Industrial Democracy of New York of which the Harvard Socialist Club is an affiliated chapter.

Subscriptions Sought

W. H. Melish '31, the editor, and president of the Harvard Socialist Club, has sent letters to Liberal and Socialist Clubs and organizations in colleges throughout the country to seek material and subscriptions. A regular column will be devoted in each issue to news reports of college liberal activity, and, in addition, each issue will carry a report of the political and social situation in some important college or university. In this way the new paper will serve as a means of communication between colleges.

The first issue which is being rushed out so as to be available before Election Day includes articles by A. S. Coolidge '15, candidate for Socialist Secretary of State in Massachusetts, who writes on "Socialism in the Colleges", and by H. D. Ursell, graduate of Cambridge and this year's holder of the Choate Memorial Fellowship, on "Unemployment Insurance in England and the United States", as well as a column to be conducted by Edward Hartshorne '33, who spent the summer traveling in Russia. Editorials and new articles will also be included.

New Men Needed

Although the Board of editors of "The Socialist" has been formed and committees are under way on the other activities, there is still an opening for new men, interested in journalism or public speaking. These will be welcomed at any of the Tuesday night meetings held at 8 o'clock in Straus 18.

The Socialist Club hopes to operate with the Harvard Liberal Club in its activities, and plans to attend the lectures which are being organized by the Liberal Club. There is no desire, however on the part of the Socialists according to Melish, to interfere or compete with the Liberals who are fulfilling a worth while function in the University.

The editorial board of "The Socialist" is as follows: News Editor, A. S. Downer '34, Feature editor. J. P. Hall '33, Managing Editor, A. R. Whitman '34. In addition, there is a board of contributing editors from the Young People's Socialist League, consisting of Donald Thompson '29, L.C. Cartwright. A. D. Gordon, and Louis Rabinowits.
