School of the Theatre is to be Established Here in Cambridge

New York, N. Y., Dec. 5--Definite plans for the establishment of a school of the theatre in Cambridge were completed at a meeting held tonight in the board room of the Harvard Club of New York City, attended by a group of the most distinguished men in the theatrical world. Winthrop Ames '95 presided over the discussion.

The group which attended the meeting included Heywood Broun '10, John Mason Brown '23, William Merriam Chadbourne '00, Owen Gould Davis '92, Robert Edmond Jones '10, Walter Pritchard Eaton '00, Kenneth MacGowan '11, Lee Simonson '09, and Maurice Wertheim '06, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana '03, Gilbert Vivian Seldes '14, Rudolf Protas Berle '14, George Francis Abbott '12, Lewis Beach '13, William Harris '19, Sydney Coe Howard, and Robert Ittell.

This movement to give Harvard a practical school of the theatre was begun in order that the gap left by the departure of George Pierce Baker and his 47 Workshop might be filled. Tonight's meeting was the culmination of a long period of work by Harvard undergraduates who felt the need of such a school, and have been engaged for several months in sounding the student body of the University with regard to the possible, establishment of such a course of study. The plans which were completed tonight call for a course to be given during the second half year.

Definite steps are being taken to put the plan into action, but nothing will be done without the consent of the University. The course will have no official connection with Harvard, but will be open to properly qualified students.
