Captain H. W. Burns '28 was awarded both the Wendell Bat and the Wingate Trophy at the baseball dinner at the Harvard Club of Boston last night. The Wendell Bat, donated by Barret Wendell Jr. '02, was awarded to Captain Burns for totalling the most points in sacrifice hits, stolen bases, runs, and safe arrivals at first base during the past season. The Wingate Trophy, donated by D. J. P. Wingate '14, was given to Burns for being the best all around player of the season.
The first speaker of the evening was Francis Rawle '69 who played on two of the greatest of the early Harvard teams. He reminisced on his experiences, saying that in the old days of small crowds and no training. "We used to get the Yale team from the station, give them a meal, take them down to the field, lick them about 20 or so to nothing and send them back on the next train."
Isadore Zarakov '27, last year's captain, the player who in the third Yale game last spring, in the last inning with two outs, hit one of the longest home runs ever seen at Soldiers Field, predicted that with so many letter-men back and Coach Mitchell again with the team, Harvard should have a banner year.
Other speakers, all diamond stars in their day, included Professor Emeritus Horatio S. White '73, who captained a victorious nine during two of the series of eight straight years of victory over Yale, and F. A. Campbell '88, another veteran who played on the University nine for several years.
The first meeting of all candidates for this spring's baseball team will take place this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Varsity Club.
