Tentative Plans of H. A. A. Call for New Indoor Athletic Plant

Natatorium May Rise Before Main Building -- Freshman Gymnasium Site Selected

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A gift of $100,000 from a graduate known only as "Alumnus Aquaticus" is the first definite step toward an immediate start on the construction of a swimming pool primarily for undergraduates, it was announced yesterday by the H. A. A. Tentative plans call for the erection of a large indoor athletic plant with full equipment on land available between Winthrop, Holyoke, and Dunster Streets, and await additional funds for their execution.

Freshman Gym To Move

As the building is planned at present, it will include the site of the Freshman Gymnasium, and extend as far as Winthrop Street, between Holyoke and Dunster Streets. It will house basketball and squash courts as well as the proposed pool. The Freshman Gymnasium will be moved elsewhere.

It is possible that the pool shown in the right wing of the accompanying photograph, will be built as a separate unit before the remainder of the structure. In this ell the swimming pool, the demensions of which will probably be 75 by 60 feet, will be on the second floor, with direct sunlight through the sky light.

In the original plans, the ground floor of this wing was designed for the H. A. A. administrative offices, but as sufficient room has been provided in the Union, it is probable that this floor will be used for squash courts.

If the necessary $250,000 is given now, the pool can be built immediately. The main building will be erected when the total cost of $1,200,000 has been raised. A provisional gift of $350,000 is available when the remainder of the sum has been collected.

Interior Plans Tentative

In the present plans the inside of the main building is merely divided into squares. It is probable however that about 18 squash courts will occupy the ground and second floors; in the basement there may be a second and smaller swimming pool, primarily for beginners, and on the third floor three basketball courts may be built, a large central floor being flanked on either side by a slightly smaller court. For intercollegiate basketball games on the center court, stands may be erected on the two smaller courts.

May Renovate Hemenway

One possibility is that rooms for boxing, wrestling, fencing, and corrective exercieses will be included in this building but Hemenway Gymnasium may be renovated and improved for these sports instead of including their facilities in the new building. There is also a tentation plan to rebuild Hemenway for squash courts, and in that event all the above mentioned sports would have rooms in the new gymnasium.

W. J. Bingham '16, Director of Athletics, professed ignorance of the identity of Alumnus Aquaticus." "He deposited the money in a Boston bank, and when ever I write to him, I leave my letter there," he said.
