Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
As a result of a recent decision of the Harvard Athletic Asociation, the old plan of allowing students to use the Weld Golf course has been abandoned, it was announced last night by W. J. Bingham '16 Director of Athletics. Some means, however, will be provided for the students who want to play golf this spring. At the same time Bingham announced that he intended to recommend to the Association that a regular Freshman golf team be organized.
The reason for doing away with the old system of using the Weld course is that it was too far away from the University and too expensive after the cost of transportation, green fee, and initiation fee was computed.
There are two possible ways, Bingham states, of solving the problem and making golf a popular sport in the University. The first is to have the University purchase a course with another party, and operate it on a fifty-fifty basis, in order to have someone who could keep the course up during the winter and summer months, when the University would have little use of it. The other is to have someone make a gift of a tract of land large enough to construct a course on; then the University could probably build one.
The course could be operated on a system somewhat similar to the one that is now in use at Yale University. The students would be charged an initial payment of $20 for the fall months and an additional green fee each month. For students who had rather play in the Spring the fee would be somewhat higher.
In accordance with his policy of having athletics for everyone, Bingham states that he will try to have a regular Freshman golf team organized this spring, with a definite schedule of games.
