THE WOMAN PAYS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University of Missouri is evidently taking this leap year seriously, at least at all social events. At the first assembly dance of the new year it was de rigueur that the feminine contingent reverse the old order by inviting the males, escorting them to the precincts of terpsichorean festivity, and paying the admittance fee. At least the masculine prom trotter was to be relieved of his anxieties, and the woman was-to pay.

Results were forthcoming, disastrous to collegiate femininity. Man was loath to walk and "co-eds" heckled with burly Jehus over the taxi fare. From the silken folds of modish dancing frocks handbags were produced at the door. Both sexes furthermore had a chance of experiencing that great American institution of the younger generation-"getting stuck"-from another angle. And at popular eating houses after the ball the reprisal was completed. Men exhausted the possibilities of the menu while their fair escorts confined themselves to the right hand side of the carte.

All the participants in this modern "Love's Labour Lost" deserve much sympathy. Experience leads toward wisdom, and wider understanding, no doubt, will be brought about between the sexes at the University of Missouri. While a permanent turning of the tables is hardly to be desired, for the moment, at least, the rest of the university and collegiate world may well turn green with envy.
