The first shall indeed be last, regardless of whether the last are first. And the Freshman, who little cares for the splendor of a Cambridge summer or the magnificence of the prelude to a Harvard Commencement, must needs linger on until the last day of examinations. Only those happy individuals who have managed to avoid the first year monster, German A, have the privilege of deserting the scene of their labors at an early date. The rest, a group which includes most of the class, are fixtures until the noon which opens the recess.
The devious complexities which constitute a schedule of courses may make it necessary to postpone the beginning German examination until the end of the period. The exigencies of examination groups are often disheartening. But even considering this, one can only sympathize with the unfortunates. Theirs is an unhappy lot; left alone, or very nearly so to struggle with the Teutonic ogre, their misery demands the pity of their more fortunate brothers. Life for others is a medley of train schedules and sailing dates; for them it is a bleak and barren desert of modul auxiliaries.
But there are some advantages to the arrangement. Perhaps not until another three years have passed will they be privileged to view a Cambridge whose glory is its static calm; not for three years will they see the midsummer aura of languidness seize what is wont to be an alert and nervous university town; and not until then will they be able to enjoy in unrivalled possession the wide spaces of Mount Auburn Street where, safe from the deadly student motor car, they may amble at peace, buried is Harris and Bierwirth. Sophomores and Juniors, and even roaming. Seniors shall pass away, but these, the darlings of the riverbank, shall not pass away immediately.
