OLDEST HARVARD FELLOW RESIGNS

It was announced at University Hall yesterday that Dr. Henry Pickering Walcott '58 has resigned as a member of the Corporation after 37 years of service to the University.

The election of Jeremiah Smith Jr. '92 to succeed Dr. Walcott was ratified yesterday at a special meeting of the Board of Overseers, Mr. Smith is a member of the Boston law firm of Herrick, Smith, Donald, and Farley, and was from 1924 to 1926 Commissioner General for Hungary of the League of Nations. At the time of his resignation from this post, he received much publicity through his refusing the check for $100,000 which the Hungarian government pressed upon him. He was nominated this year for the Board of Overseers, but as a member of the Corporation, he is no longer eligible for candidacy to the Board.

In this connection the Overseers have voted that should any successful candidate for the Board in 1927 become ineligible on or before Commencement Day, the other six candidates having the highest number of votes shall be elected.

Dr. Walcott was born in Salem in 1838, and after graduating from Harvard College, studied in the Harvard and Bowdoin Medical Schools, receiving his degree of Doctor of Medicine from the latter institution in 1861. He then studied for two years in Vienna and Berlin, returning to Cambridge to practice his profession. In 1887, he became and Overseer, serving until his election as a Fellow in 1890. He was acting President of Harvard in 1900-01, and received an honorary degree from Yale in 1907.

His successor graduated from Harvard in 1892, and from the Law School three years later. He was a lecturer in the Law School in 1905-06 and also in the following year. He is a trustee of Exerted Academy, and was director of the Harvard Alumni Association from 1919 to 1922. As Commissioner General for the League of Nations in Hungary during the years of 1924 to 1926, he was responsible for the financial reconstruction of that country.
