E. S. Harkness of New York, who has given many gifts to Yale has donated $50,000 to the Charles Sprague Sargent Memorial Fund of $1,000,000 for the Arnold Arboretum, contingent upon the raising in New York and other cities of approximately $500,000, the amount needed to complete the fund, it was announced yesterday by Henry James '99 chairman of the New York campaign committee. The fact that the plan of riding clubs situated near the Arboretum to lay out a short bridle path through it has been approved, was made known by Oakes Ames '98, Professor of Botany and Supervisor of the Arnold Arboretum.
The gift of Mr. Harkness has been made on condition that a fund of $460,000 be raised in cities other than Boston and vicinity; of this amount $109,250 has already been raised in New York. Nearly half the total fund has been raised in and around Boston and if opportunity presented by the conditional offer is accepted, the memorial will be completed.
Charles Sprague Sargent '62 died last March and since his death the University has organized the fund as a memorial to him for his exceptional work in developing the Arboretum, of which he had full charge from its inception in 1872. Sargent was Professor of Arboriculture and Director of the Arnold Arboretum.
The bridle path which is to be laid out will serve as a short cut for riders in reaching the Brookline bridle path with which it will connect. In the past they have been forced to ride over macadam roads in order to reach it, so permission was granted by Professor Ames for the construction.
