FATAL ERRORS GIVE HOLY CROSS CONTEST

Freshmen Beat Holy Cross First-Year Nine With Six Hits--Brown 1929 Take 3 to 1 Win From Seconds

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Costly errors by the Crimson inner defense in the sixth and eighth innings played a large part in an 8 to 4 victory for Holy Cross over the University baseball team on Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon. The Crusaders were trailing three runs to two at the start of the sixth frame, when they practically sewed up their twelfth straight triumph in five years at the expense of the University, on misplays by Zarakov and a bad break in the outfield. The Freshmen wiped out some of the sting of this defeat by trouncing the Holy Cross first-year aggregation by a decisive 6 to 1 count. The Seconds bowed to the Brown 1929 squad by a 3 to 1 score.

Barbee Deserves to Win

Barbee was assigned the hurling duties, and after a bad first inning settled down to turn back the rival batsmen effectively. The Crimson mound ace deserved an even chance to win, but did not receive the support which the Purple defense gave Fons, the diminutive twirler who chalked up his sixth straight win yesterday. The visitors found the offerings of Barbee for nine safe blows, but could only collect two earned runs, one less than the University attack gathered from Fons' deliveries.

The Crimson batsmen could not fathon the fast hooks of Fons until the fourth inning, when Tobin singled after Captain Todd had flied out. Chauncey, the next man up connected with the second ball pitched for a hard bingle, scoring Tobin. Sullivan flied out to the first baseman, and Ullman, the next man up, hit safely between first and second. Chauncey counted when Doherty, the visiting receiver, dropped the throw home. Barbee drove out a single.

The University second baseman died on the paths when Burns rolled out, second to first. Fons showed his first sings of weakening in this frame and it appeared as if the Crimson hitters had him on the down path. Barbee retired the Crusaders in their half of the fifth with three straight strikeouts. The University hurler set the two leaders of the Holy Cross batting order down with eightpitched balls. In their half of the same inning, the Crimson attack chased one more run across the plate to lead the visitors for the first time. Jones led off with a single, was advanced to second on Zarakov's infield out, and counted when McEntee lost the throw to first on Todd's infield hit.

Sixth Inning Errors Fatal

Cote led off the fatal sixth with a long blow to center field which Burns captured after a hard run. Morrissey, the next men up drove a hard ground ball at the University third sacker and reached first on the error. He stole second, took third on Savage's out to the infield. The next man to face Barbee hit a fast bounding ball down the third base line which Zarakov bobbled. Freeman scored both men with a long single to left which went for a safety when Todd slipped and fell, and spiked the plate a moment later on McEntee's hit. In the eighth, the Purple tallied three more runs after two men were out. Doherty, the opposing back stop, was the third man at the plate, and was grazed by one of Barbee's fast shoots. Freeman, the next two men connected safely and the damage was done.

In the Freshman tussel, the Crimson nine scored six markers on as many safe blows. Ketchum, the 1929 mound ace was touched for nine safeties but bore down hard in the pinches and aided by airtight support in the infield was able to hold the Purple first-year hitters to one run. Miyakawa, the flashy Japanese short fielder, continued to shine in the Crimson attack with two scored runs, two hits, and a base on balls. Donaghy wielded the heavy bludgeon in the afternoon's play. The Freshman third sacker drove out a four ply wallop in the first inning to account for one of the two runs scored in that frame.

At Providence the University Seconds went down, when Bloom, the Brown 1929 catcher took hold of one of Nash's fast balls for a circuit blow scoring a man before him. The losers scored their lone run in the eighth on Cuzzen's triple followed by Donaldson's single. Nash gave the defenders seven hits while the Crimson nine was collected five blows from the offerings of Arnold, the Brown hurler. Following the contest John Bertram Dacey '26, of Dorchester was elected leader of the Second team.
