HARVARD MAN SMASHES ALL RECORDS IN WORCESTER HIKE

George Emerson Smith '26, clad in a white sweater, hatless, and wearing heavy hiking boots arrived at the City Hall of Worcester shortly after 2 o'clock, Saturday afternoon Smith had hiked the distance of 44 miles from Boston to Worcester in ten hours and 14 minutes, a record time.

Smith made a wager with John F. Novak of Boston, that he could beat his record. Novak had hiked from Boston to Providence, which is practically the same distance, in ten hours and 28 minutes. Smith, in winning, averaged 13.64 minutes to a mile.

Smith was especially hampered by a fractured leg which he suffered last year and which was paining him. A blister also added to his troubles together with the slippery footing of the ice covered road.

A group of Harvard students in automobiles conducted Smith to the Boston Post Road. At 10.35 o'clock, Smith arrived at Marlboro extremely confident. A crowd awaited him as he arrived at the City Hall in Worcester at 2.14 o'clock, seemingly none the worse for his journey.
