Smith Halls captured first honors in the Winter Season Dormitory Sports Series according to a statement issued yesterday by D. J. Kelly, Assistant Director of Physical Education. The Smith Hall athletes scored 31 points for first position, while Standish and Gore tied for second place with 25 points each.
Last year, Gore Hall took first place and Smith, last. Gore won the Fall Interdormitory Series this year. The Spring interdormitory sports tourney will begin soon. Baseball, Rowing, Track, Tennis, Lacrosse, and Handball are the sports from which competitors may choose.
There were seven sports in the Winter series. Smith captured four first places, Standish two, and Gore one. Incidentally, Standish Hall won the Interdormitory Hockey Championship for the fifth consecutive year.
Scoring Same as in Track
Standish Hall also took first place in the number of its residents who received numerals in Hockey, Basketball, or Wrestling. Gore was second and Smith third.
The point scoring is the same as that used in a three-place track meet. Five points are awarded for a first place, three for a second, and one for a third. The basketball tournament was divided into three classes of three teams each, in this way, each hall had three teams entered.
Mr. Kelly pointed out that the reason for the existence of the competitive system in physical training is to arouse a feeling of rivalry among the Freshmen, and in that way, make physical exercise a pleasure and not a task.
