DEFROCKED BISHOP TO ENTERTAIN LIBERALS

Bishop William Montgomery Brown, former head of the Episcopal diocese of Ohio, will speak at the Liberal Club at 1.30 o'clock today. All members of the University are invited. His subject is "Liberalism or Liberation.

This speech should be of particular interest because of the recent prominence which Bishop Brown has attained in the news of the day by his dismissal from office in the Episcopal church for alleged heretical statements in a pamphlet entitled "Communism and Christianism", which came out last January.

A statement of his in defense of his confession made before the House of Bishops at New Orleans this fall defends his booklet as follows:--"It was not intended as a retraction of any representation of the booklet, but as an explanation of how I can hold to my new faith without giving up the old-accept the revelation of science, yet not reject that of tradition, and be at once a Modernist, Fundamentalist, Christian, Jew, Mohammedar, Buddhist and what not."

Bishop Brown was deposed from the Episcopal Church as a heretic two months ago. Before holding office in Ohio, he was Bishop of Arkansas from 1899-1912. He was priest in charge of Grace Church, Galion, Ohio, in 1884. Since then he has been a general missionary and archdeacon of Ohio and also a special lecturer an the theological seminary.

He has written several articles from time to time: "The Church for Americans" in 1895. "The Crucial Race Question" in 1906. "The Level Plan for Church Union" in 1910 and "Communism and Christianism" in 1920. The latter article preceded his dismissal from office.
