EXPENDITURE OF $15,000 MADE ON UNION BUILDING

"The money spent by the students of the University at the Harvard Union was profitably used this summer," J. J. Mead, superintendent of the Union Building, stated yesterday. "More than $15,000 was spent on Improvements and I think that at present the building is better equipped than at any time since it was erected 25 years ago."

First among the improvements announced by Mr. Mead were the increased facilities in the dining hall and kitchen. Last year a maximum of 650 men at a time could eat at the Union, but now 60 percent more than that number can be handled. Already this year the average number of men eating at the Union is 25 percent greater than the average at any time last year.

To make possible this increase in numbers of men served, new ranges have been installed in the kitchen, and also a number of dishwashing machines.

Especially pleasing to occupants of rooms in the Union and to customary users of the second floor is the new ventilation system. The installation of fans in the kitchen will keep the odors of cooking away from the remainder of the building.

The front stairs are new, and Mr. Mead expects them to last longer than the 25 years of the old stairs' existence. The building has been made more attractive by the addition of new easy-chairs, and safer through the installation of a complete sprinkling system. The billiard room has been put in perfect condition with new cloths and cushions, new cues, and new pool and billiard balls.

From the employees' standpoint also the money has been well spent. New lockers, a new lavatory, and a rest room are the improvements which especially benefit the employees.
