DEAN, NOTED ENGLISH PLAYWRIGHT, TO SPEAK

Tomorrow evening at 7.00 o'clock Basil Dean O.B. E., noted English producer, will speak in the Faculty Room of the Union under the auspices of the Harvard Dramatic Club. Although the Dramatic Club's open meeting which will officially launch its 1925-26 season does not come until next week, all members of the University interested in the theatre are invited to attend.

Eduardo Sauchez '26, President of the Dramatic Club, speaking of the producer's visit, said: "The Dramatic Club is fortunate in being able to secure Basil Dean for tomorrow's meeting at the Union. His visit is especially significant at this time as Galsworthy's "Forest," a play now being considered for production by the Dramatic Club, had its most notable presentation in London under the man who tomorrow will speak at the Union."

Although Mr. Dean will not direct this year's effort of the Dramatic Club, even should they decide to put on Galsworthy's play, the officers of the club nevertheless hope to secure from him suggestions and other indirect aid.

Life Bound Up in Theatre

Basil Dean, who is an officer of the Order of the British Empire, has devoted his whole life to the theatre. Besides being the author of numerous plays and pamphlets, among them "Marriages Are Made in Heaven," "The Love Cheats," and more recently "Fifinella." Mr. Dean has been joint managing director of the Drury Lane Theatre in London since 1924 and managing director of St. Martin's Theatre, also in London. Before the war, he was director of the Liverpool Repertory Theatre, and at the outbreak of hostilities, joined the Cheshire Regiment. In 1916 he attained the rank of captain, and later became associated with the British War Officer, serving as Director of its Entertainment Branch.

Has Produced in This Country

Though Mr. Dean's theatrical efforts have been chiefly confined to European production, he has also attained a high standard in the plays put on in this country. "Peter Pan" with Marilyn Miller, last year, and Noel Coward's "The Vortex" are outstanding among his triumphs.

The production of "The School for Scandal" is at present engaging Mr. Dean's efforts. He proposes to put on Sheridan's old play with a simplified stage plan wherein a good deal of the usual scenery is left out, thus putting upon the actors the burden of creating the atmosphere.
