With four boats painted a brilliant crimson, with the names of two slightly changed, and with improvements on all the gasoline engines, the University crew coaching regatia will make an entirely different appearance on the charles from now on.
The "Pip" has been renamed the "Pep", and the "Brown Pup" has been changed to the "Black Pup". The names of the "White Pup" and the "Class of 1892" are unchanged. These 4 boats have been painted a brilliant crimson. The "Black Pup" has a 2 inch black stripe on each side and across the stern to distinguish it from the "White Pup," which has a similar stripe of white.
During the summer all the gasoline engines were overhauled and repainted, and they are now in perfect working condition; so much so, in fact, that the lowly "Pep" can now keep pace with the pride of the fleet, the "Patricia."
The "John Harvard" has not been changed, and is still white with a yellow funnel. The mahogany finish on the "Patricia" also remains untouched.
The 4 boats were painted red instead of the usual white because the great quantities of oil, both in the Charles and in the Thames, made it impossible to keep the boats clean.
