What promises to be a championship Freshman tennis overwhelmed the Dartmouth yearlings yesterday afternoon at the Divinity Courts by the one sided score of 5 to 1.
Although the outcome was never in doubt, some brilliant tennis was called forth. Playing at number one, Lenhart found little difficulty in defeating Partridge of Dartmouth 6-3, 9-7. There were few long rallies, for it was one of those interesting matches in which both players try for clean placements. Partridge adopted aggressive tactics, rushing to the net on long drives to Lenhart's back-hand but the latter seemed to be able to place his shoots as will down the side lines an across court.
Schuster of the Green team caught Gordon off his game in the first two sets but after dropping the second set, the Crimson player finally settled down, and with the aid of his fast slice service, pulled himself out of the hole by the narrow margin of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
But perhaps the most outstanding player on the Freshman team was Thompson. By his steady playing he won both his singles and doubles matches with comparative ease.
Welte and Morcroft save the Green from a whitewash when they defeated Lenhart and Pratt, 6-2, 7-5.
The Summary:
Singles -- Lenhart (H) defeated Partridge (H) 6-3, 9-7: Gordon (H) defeated Schuster (D) 6-4, 3-6, 6-4: Thompson (H) defeated Welte (D) 6-3, 6-1: Jackson (H) defeated Morcroft (D) 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Doubles -- Gordon and Thompson (H) defeated Partridge and Schuster (D) 6-3, 6-3; Welte and Morcroft (D) defeated Lenhart and Pratt (H) 6-2 7-5.
