PENN RELAYS ATTRACT 16 CRIMSON ATHLETES

When the Penn Relay Carnival opens its two day session with the preliminary events this afternoon the interest of track enthusiasts throughout the country will be centered in Philadelphia. Picked athletes from preparatory school and college track teams from the East, the West, Canada, and England will open the spring track season in the 93 events which are listed in the program of the mammoth track meet at Franklin Field.

Crimson in 3 Relays, 6 Field Events

Of these 93 events, the University will be represented in but nine,--three relay and six field contests. Only two of these events, the medley relay and the hammer throw are scheduled for this afternoon. The Crimson vanguard of eight men left for Philadelphia yesterday afternoon with the eight men who are likely to be called on for these events,--Berglund in the hammer throw and for the relay race, Captain Merrill, Robb, Kane, and Watters, with Allen, Tibbetts and Broome as possible alternates.

May withdraw from Relay Today

Although full preparations have been made to send this medley team into the races, it was hinted last night that the Crimson runners might be withdrawn at the last moment and the runners saved for the one and four-mile races for which they are also entered tomorrow. Coach Farrell left for Philadelphia late last night still undecided as to the course which he will pursue this afternoon. It is probable that he will make no decision until shortly before the race starts, after he has had a chance to look over the field which will oppose his runners.

Should he decide to enter his team it is probable that they will run with Captain Merrill and Robb covering the 220 distances, Kane the 440 lap, and Watters the final half-time stretch. Staff opposition is looked for in this race, especially from Penn State, Yale, Georgetown, and Cambridge University, England. The finish is sure to be spectacular with Lowe, the English star and Heffrich of Penn State to oppose Watters over the 880-yards distance.

Second Contingent Leaves Today

The remaining eight men of the Crimson squad which is to participate in tomorrow's events will leave for Philadelphia at 1 o'clock today accompanied by Assistant Manager Brooks. Whitehouse '25.

In this group are Cutcheop and Chapin who will run with Watters and Tibbetts in the four mile relay race; Carpenter and Hallowel who are entered for the discus; Kernan and Greenidge, javelin throwers; Eastman who will be the Crimson's only shot putter; and Hyatt, who will compete for the University in both the broad and high jumps.

In addition, Coach Farrell will enter tomorrow a crack one mile relay team picked from the squad which left on Thursday. This team will probably be composed of Captain Merrill, Allen, Robb, and Kane.
