FORM GROUP FOR SOCIAL SERVICE IN NEW YORK

WILL SPEND 7 WEEKS STUDYING CONDITIONS IN CITY

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Any men connected with the University who wish to join the College Summer Service Group of New York City may apply by signing in the blue book in Phillips Brooks House office. The group will be limited to 50 carefully picked college men who want the opportunity to study social conditions in New York for a period of seven weeks, in preparation for Christian leadership.

Will Get First Hand Contact

The object is to aid these men in the study of social conditions through firsthand contact in sections of New York City where conditions are frequently at their worst; to give them an introductory training as Christian leaders; and to make clear the advantages of graduate study in preparation for such service. The men will work under supervision throughout the period of their residence--one or two men each in various church neighborhood houses, Young Men's Christian Associations, Settlements, and similar institutions of the city. Their work will occupy two periods out of three each day, counting forenoon, afternoon and evening.

Group meetings will be held twice each week in the Church House of the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church preceded by a swim and a luncheon. Opportunity will be afforded to meet and listen to some of the foremost social and religious leaders in America.

Will Pick Men With Great Care

The men of the group will be picked with great care from members of the incoming senior classes, with a few from outgoing senior classes and incoming junior classes of the various colleges and universities. They should have, in addition to other work, some background in sociology and Bible study. Previous experience in social service will be a distinct asset.

Work Will Begin on June 27

The men, who are selected, will begin work in New York on June 27 and 28, no one will be received later than June 30, and remain through August 15. It is most desirable that every man, before going, should attend a student summer conference. The work of the summer will be summarized in a special two-day conference period on August 14 and 15.
